Fable main story will take about 20 hours, Playground Games confirms at Gamescom

Playground Games has confirmed that the upcoming Fable title will take roughly 20 hours to complete if players focus solely on the main story, with the option to extend playtime significantly through side content and life simulation mechanics.
The information came to light during a group Q&A session at Gamescom 2026, attended by Polygon. Associate game director Will Kennedy stated that the game's mainline quest content amounts to around 15-20 hours, with a further 15-20 hours of side and open-world exploration content available. "And then, of course, the life systems are limitless, so you can play them for as long as you want," Kennedy added.
This places the new Fable in a similar ballpark to its predecessors, though the inclusion of open-ended life sim elements marks a notable departure for the series. The developers emphasised that the game is designed to accommodate different playstyles. "As Will just said, you can literally play it forever if that's what you want to do," reiterated Craig Littler, another associate game director at Playground Games, in response to a comment that the game is "not a huge game."
The life sim components, which were previously teased in relation to NPC interactions, appear to be a major factor in extending replayability. Players who wish to explore every corner of the new rendition of Albion and build relationships with its inhabitants can expect to spend far more than the baseline 20 hours.
The game's scope appears deliberately flexible. Those who want a focused narrative experience can complete the story in a relatively short time, while completionists and players who engage deeply with the open-world and social systems will find a much longer adventure. The developers' comments suggest that the game rewards the time invested, offering a breadth of content that scales with the player's curiosity.
Fable is scheduled to launch on February 27, 2027, and will be available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. It is being developed by Playground Games and published by Xbox Game Studios. The title was also showcased at Gamescom with an 18-minute gameplay trailer, offering a deeper look at its quests and world.
The confirmation of the game's length provides a clearer picture of what players can expect from the upcoming RPG. While some modern role-playing games can stretch into the hundreds of hours, Fable appears to be aiming for a more contained but still substantial experience, with the life sim elements providing the potential for near-endless engagement. The balance between a focused main quest and open-ended side activities is likely to appeal to a broad range of players, from those who prefer a tight narrative to those who enjoy getting lost in a virtual world.
As the release date approaches, more details about the game's mechanics and world are expected to emerge. For now, the message from Playground Games is clear: Fable can be as long or as short as the player makes it, with the core story offering a solid 20-hour journey and the surrounding content providing ample reason to linger.
