Persona 4 Revival producer confirms Yosuke romance is not happening due to time constraints
Fans hoping to romance Yosuke in Persona 4 Revival will have to keep dreaming. The game's producer, Kazuhisa Wada, has officially confirmed that the much-requested same-sex romance option will not be included in the upcoming remake, citing the enormous workload that would follow.
Speaking to GamesRadar+ at Gamescom 2026, Wada addressed the long-standing demand for a romance route with Yosuke, a character whose unused romantic dialogue with the protagonist was discovered in the original Persona 4's data files years ago. "I was aware that some people were talking online about, like, 'Oh, Yosuke,' and they were kind of hoping for that," Wada said through an interpreter. He explained that the development team's reasoning was pragmatic: if they added a romance for Yosuke, they would feel compelled to do the same for every other male character in the game. "That is a lot of work," he said. "So we were thinking about our time and schedule. I don't know if we could actually handle this, so we decided to let Yosuke float on by."
The decision is a disappointment for many fans, especially given that Persona 4 Revival has already made several changes to Yosuke's dialogue and scenes. Wada confirmed that some of his lines have been revised to be "a little bit more fitting for the world we live in now," with a notorious homophobic comment directed at another character being the most prominent example. Those revisions had led some players to hope that the character might be receiving a more substantial overhaul, including a romance option.
This is not the first time Atlus has faced such a situation. Wada previously apologised for the absence of Kotone, the female protagonist from Persona 3 Portable, in Persona 3 Reload, offering a similar explanation: it would have been too expensive. In that case, dedicated fans took matters into their own hands, modding Kotone into the game and even redoing every animated cutscene themselves.
The original Persona 4, released in 2008, already contained data-mined voice recordings that suggested a closer relationship between Yosuke and the protagonist Yu Narukami was planned but ultimately cut. Fans have since restored that scrapped romance in the PC version of Persona 4 Golden via mods. It is expected that similar modding efforts will follow after Persona 4 Revival's release, though the changed voice cast for the remake means the unused original dialogue will not be available.
Persona 4 Revival is one of the most anticipated JRPGs worldwide, promising a wealth of new features, gameplay enhancements, and story updates. Wada has described the remake as a "faithful" one, arguing that the original's themes have only grown more relevant because "we live in an age where information is everywhere." Earlier this month, he also expressed interest in eventually remaking Persona 1 and Persona 2, sparking hope among fans of the series' earlier entries.
Despite the romance setback, the remake continues to generate excitement. The decision to leave Yosuke's romance out may be a bitter pill for some, but it appears the team has prioritised other aspects of the game over expanding the social link system to include same-sex options. For now, players who want to see that relationship fully realised will have to rely on the modding community once again.
