Rockstar cut GTA 6 from four protagonists to two to avoid diluting player connection

Rockstar considered giving Grand Theft Auto 6 four playable protagonists before settling on the two that appear in the final game, according to a studio lead. The developer feared that spreading the story across too many characters would weaken the player's bond with each one.
In an interview with IGN, Rockstar co-head Rod Nelson explained that the team discussed whether to follow up Grand Theft Auto 5's three protagonists with an even larger roster. "After doing GTA 5, we talked about different ideas of 'Do we have more characters? How do we follow up three characters? Is it four characters now?'" Nelson said. "But we worried about diluting the amount of player time with each, and therefore player connection with those characters."
The concern about spreading attention too thin ultimately led Rockstar to reduce the count to two. "The question became: how do you make players feel like 'I love them both'," Nelson added. "Chemistry is a notoriously hard thing to do in any sort of entertainment. Either the characters and the actors that embody them have it—or they don't."
Nelson stated that "everyone involved worked at that pretty hard" and believes the team "got it." He also noted that internal reaction to the duo has been positive: "I think we've got enough reaction within our team internally to where [Lucia and Jason] feel great as individuals and together."
The decision to focus on two protagonists has been a defining creative choice for Grand Theft Auto 6. An extended trailer that recently aired on Netflix showcased the relationship between the two characters, Lucia and Jason, who are described as soulmates in crime. The trailer included a moment where Lucia is beaten and thrown down a flight of stairs, which one observer noted was surprisingly shocking because the earlier footage had invested them in the pair's relationship more than they ever felt for any character in Grand Theft Auto 5.
The relationship between Lucia and Jason is central to the game's narrative, though players may find that the two are not perfectly suited to each other in every aspect of life, depending on how they engage with the game's romance elements. Rockstar appears eager for players to experience that bond, with Nelson emphasising that the studio is "quite conscious to try and make sure that players have enough time with each character" as the story unfolds.
Beyond the protagonist count, Grand Theft Auto 6 features a world that is three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's, and includes a more nuanced version of the honour system seen in that earlier Wild West game. Nelson described the game as "a whole other world" where "there's a whole lot of stuff that you discover emergently." The campaign mission design is said to stick closely to Rockstar's established script, but the central partnership between Lucia and Jason is expected to define the experience over previous entries in the series.
The move from three protagonists in Grand Theft Auto 5 to two in Grand Theft Auto 6 represents a deliberate choice to deepen character connection rather than expand the roster. As Nelson put it, the studio wanted to ensure players feel "I love them both" rather than spreading their time across too many characters. The result, he believes, is a relationship that feels genuine and engaging.
