Fable's main story is 15-20 hours, but life sim elements let you "play it forever"

Playground Games has confirmed that the upcoming Fable will have a main story of around 15 to 20 hours, with a similar amount of side content available through exploration and open-world activities. The developers have also emphasised that the game's life simulation elements are designed to be effectively limitless, allowing players to continue indefinitely if they choose to engage with those systems.
The details emerged during a Gamescom Q&A session, where associate game director Will Kennedy told Polygon that the mainline quest gameplay runs for 15 to 20 hours, with an additional 15 to 20 hours of side and open-world exploration content. "And then, of course, the life systems are limitless, so you can play them for as long as you want," Kennedy said. Fellow associate game director Craig Littler added: "You can literally play it forever if that's what you want to do."
The announcement has sparked discussion among fans, some of whom have expressed concern that the main story may be shorter than expected for a modern RPG. The developers are clearly hoping that the game's open-world exploration and social elements will be enough to pad out the overall experience. The life sim features, which include home and business management, starting a family, and taking on jobs, are presented as a key reason to keep playing long after the main narrative concludes.
A shift in expectations
The length of Fable's main campaign is actually in keeping with the series' history. The original three Fable games are each listed at around 15 hours to complete the main story on HowLongToBeat, with that time extending to 25 hours or more depending on side quests. The new entry is therefore not breaking from tradition, but the landscape of role-playing games has changed significantly since the original trilogy. Titles such as The Witcher 3, Baldur's Gate 3, and Elden Ring have set new benchmarks for playtime, with their main stories often taking dozens of hours and total completion running into the hundreds.
Still, the original Fable games are beloved for their breezy, focused storytelling that doesn't overstay its welcome. The new game appears to be aiming for a similar balance, with the added depth of life simulation systems offering a different kind of longevity. The fact that Playground Games is confident enough in these aspects to cite them as a reason to play forever suggests that the team has invested heavily in making the sandbox elements feel substantial and rewarding.
Platforms and release date
After multiple delays, Fable is now scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027. It will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and, in a first for the series, a Sony console, with a PS5 port arriving on the same day. The game is being developed by Playground Games and published by Xbox Game Studios. It runs on Unreal Engine 4 and Forza Tech, and is rated Mature 17+ for blood, sexual themes, strong language, and violence. The genre is described as RPG, adventure, and action.
Whether the life sim elements will be enough to satisfy players who expect a longer main story remains to be seen. For some, the promise of limitless play through home management, relationships, and jobs may be exactly what the series needs to feel fresh. For others, the shorter main quest may feel like a step back in an era of sprawling epics. The game's combat has shown promise in previews, and the open world appears to be large and dynamic, offering plenty of opportunities for sandbox shenanigans. Ultimately, players will be able to judge for themselves when Fable arrives next year.
