Konami wants annual Silent Hill releases and has 'many' unannounced projects in the works

Konami has laid out an ambitious plan for the future of its psychological horror series Silent Hill, aiming to release a new game in the franchise every year. The publisher has confirmed that it is already working on "many" unannounced projects to support this goal.

Silent Hill franchise producer Motoi Okamoto revealed the plan in an interview at Gamescom 2026, stating that the company's aim is to "hopefully, have an annual release of new games." This marks a significant shift for a series that spent years largely dormant, with only occasional spin-offs and remasters before its recent revival.

The push for yearly releases is part of a broader strategy to keep the franchise feeling fresh. Okamoto explained that Konami wants to move Silent Hill away from its traditional setting of the foggy, decaying American town. "If we stay laser-focused on the same American setting, that would exhaust [narrative] possibilities, and also potentially cause fatigue for the playerbase," he said. Instead, the series will travel around the world, allowing different developers to "work within the types of environments and the types of storytelling that works best for them."

This global approach reflects Konami's continued reliance on external studios. Every main Silent Hill game released or announced this decade has been developed by a team other than Konami itself. The publisher's own in-house Team Silent, which created the original games, is long gone. However, Konami has formed a lasting relationship with Bloober Team for remakes, ensuring that at least one developer remains committed to the series across multiple projects.

Okamoto acknowledged that there are "still many projects that are still under the works and very unannounced titles." While he could not go into specifics, he promised that fans have more to look forward to. "We would like to let players know that we have more experiences coming up, and many types of games that, we believe, will be able to provide positive kinds of surprises for players waiting for this for the series," he said.

The announcement of an annual release schedule has drawn some concern from fans who worry that such a rapid output could dilute the quality and identity of the series. Okamoto, however, seemed confident that the upcoming projects will satisfy the fanbase.

The next confirmed Silent Hill game is Silent Hill: Townfall, which is due for release on 24 September 2026. Details about the title have been emerging, and some have expressed scepticism about whether it will live up to Okamoto's promise of "positive surprises."

Konami's strategy mirrors the annual release cycles of major franchises like Call of Duty and EA Sports FC, but for a horror series that has historically been defined by slow-burn psychological dread, the shift to a yearly model represents a significant change in direction. Whether the quality can keep pace with the quantity remains to be seen, but the publisher is clearly betting that more Silent Hill is better than less.
