Modern Warfare 4 beta update nerfs footsteps, adds Cachette map and Inflation mode

Infinity Ward has rolled out the first major update for the Modern Warfare 4 beta, responding to player feedback from the opening day. The patch introduces a new map and a new mode, but its most notable change is a reduction in footstep audio, a persistent point of contention in recent Call of Duty titles.
The update adds the map Cachette, a tight, urban environment designed for close-quarters combat, and the mode Inflation, which appears to be a limited-time variant that escalates the stakes of a standard match. The exact rules of Inflation have not been detailed, but it is described as a twist on the core formula that rewards aggressive play.
Footstep audio and weapon balance
The headline change is a reduction in the volume of player footsteps. In the beta’s first day, many players reported that enemy footsteps were too loud, making it easy to pinpoint an opponent’s location through walls and encouraging a slow, sound-whoring playstyle. The update dials back that audio cue, aiming to make movement less punishing and to restore some of the game’s pacing.
Beyond audio, the patch addresses two weapons that were overperforming. The ISO Nightshade, a submachine gun, has received a damage reduction at range, curbing its effectiveness in mid-range engagements. The Oris 8.6, a marksman rifle, has had its fire rate slowed and its recoil increased, making it less forgiving for players who spam shots. Both weapons were widely used in the beta’s opening hours, and the changes are intended to bring them in line with the rest of the arsenal.
Map voting and spawns
Infinity Ward has also tweaked the map voting system. In the initial beta build, players could only vote between two maps, and the option to skip a vote was absent. The update adds a “skip” option, letting the lobby move to a random map if neither choice appeals. The developer has not commented on whether a full three-map voting screen will return, but the change addresses a common complaint from the beta’s first day.
Spawn logic has also been adjusted. The update notes that spawn points on several maps have been reworked to reduce the frequency of “spawn trapping,” where a team can pin the opposing team into a single corner of the map. The patch specifically targets the map Overlook, which had the most severe spawn issues in the beta’s opening hours.
What the beta includes and what comes next
The Modern Warfare 4 beta, which began on 6 October for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, gives players a taste of the game’s multiplayer ahead of its full launch. The beta includes a selection of maps, modes, and the new Gunsmith 2.0 system, which allows deeper weapon customisation. A second beta weekend, open to all platforms, is scheduled for later in October.
The full game is set to release on 10 November for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It is the fourth mainline entry in the Modern Warfare sub-series, following 2019’s Modern Warfare, 2022’s Modern Warfare 2, and 2023’s Modern Warfare 3. The series has been a flagship for Activision, with each entry selling millions of copies and driving the live-service ecosystem of Warzone, the free-to-play battle royale.
The state of the beta
The beta has been generally well-received, with praise for the gunplay and map design, but criticism has focused on footstep audio, weapon balance, and the lack of map voting. This update addresses those three pillars, and Infinity Ward has said that further patches will follow as the beta continues. The developer has also acknowledged feedback on the game’s minimap and the time-to-kill (TTK), but has not yet committed to changes in those areas.
For now, players who jumped into the beta on day one will find a noticeably different experience. The footstep audio is quieter, the ISO Nightshade and Oris 8.6 are less dominant, and the new map Cachette offers a fresh environment to learn. The mode Inflation, meanwhile, provides a new way to play for those who have already burned through the standard offerings.
The beta remains live for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S players, with the cross-platform weekend set to follow. The full launch of Modern Warfare 4 is just over a month away.
