Rockstar and Nopixel launch invite-only GTA 5 roleplay server Nopixel V with 1,000 ownable properties

Rockstar Games has announced a new collaboration with Nopixel Studios to launch Nopixel V, the latest version of the custom Grand Theft Auto 5 roleplaying experience, which it describes as "the next evolution of the GTA 5 roleplay community." The announcement has raised eyebrows among some followers of the roleplaying scene, given that the server is not open to the general public and arrives just months before the release of Grand Theft Auto 6.

Nopixel V is a modded sandbox built on top of GTA 5, developed in partnership with Rockstar and accessible through the Rockstar Games Launcher. However, access is initially limited to a select group of invited streamers, whose names are listed on the Nopixel website. The beta phase will expand over time, with additional phases of invites planned, but the current iteration remains closed to most players. Nopixel Studios confirmed on its Discord server that for everyone on the existing Nopixel Public and Nopixel 4.0 servers, "nothing changes."

The timing of the announcement has prompted some confusion. With GTA 6 expected to launch in a couple of months, many expected Rockstar to focus its roleplaying ambitions on the new title. Instead, Rockstar has not yet revealed any plans for GTA Online in relation to GTA 6, nor has it provided a PC release date for the upcoming game. For now, the future of GTA roleplaying remains firmly rooted in GTA 5.

What Nopixel V brings to Los Santos

Nopixel V introduces a range of new features that distinguish it from previous iterations. The most notable change is the addition of 1,000 ownable properties across the GTA 5 map, a significant expansion of player housing options. The mod also includes reworked character customisation, new areas such as the Pixel Hotel, Pixel Casino, and a revamped Cypress Flats, as well as refreshed visuals, more detailed map environments, and more reactive pedestrians.

One of the most visible changes is the completion of several long-standing construction projects around Los Santos, including the unfinished Mile High Club skyscraper in the centre of the city. Players have joked for years about the building's perpetual state of construction, and Nopixel V finally brings it to completion. However, these map updates are exclusive to the Nopixel V servers and will not be available to players on standard GTA 5 or older roleplay servers.

The Nopixel team stated that collaboration with Rockstar Games has been essential to the project, saying their teams have worked together to develop new capabilities and refine a set of development tools that have enabled them to push the boundaries of what is possible in Grand Theft Auto 5.

How to watch and earn rewards

For players who cannot access Nopixel V directly, Rockstar's announcement focuses on the opportunity to watch the experience being streamed. Invited players will begin streaming Nopixel V on September 8, and the modders are sharing details about the project throughout the week leading up to the launch.

Even regular GTA 5 players can benefit from the event. Simply tuning into streams between September 8 and September 30 will allow viewers to earn up to $1.5 million in GTA Online cash, as well as exclusive BurgerShot-themed outfits through Twitch Drops. This provides an incentive for the broader player base to engage with the new content, even if they cannot play it themselves.

Access remains tightly controlled

The closed beta for Nopixel V is limited to exclusively invited streamers, with larger tests planned for the future. The strict whitelist policy is consistent with the broader GTA roleplaying scene, where servers typically require a high-quality microphone, a stable internet connection, a unique character backstory, and even a test before allowing entry. For now, dedicated roleplayers will have to wait for access to expand.

The Nopixel team has emphasised that the existing Nopixel Public and Nopixel 4.0 servers will continue to operate as normal, so players already invested in those communities will not lose their progress. The new server is an addition rather than a replacement.

A long wait for GTA 6 roleplaying

The announcement underscores that, while GTA 6 is on the horizon, Rockstar has not yet addressed how roleplaying will fit into the next generation of the franchise. For the time being, the most ambitious roleplaying experiences remain tied to GTA 5, with Nopixel V serving as the latest example of what can be achieved through close collaboration between the developer and the modding community. Whether this will eventually lead to official roleplaying support in GTA 6 remains unconfirmed.
