The Witcher: release date, remaster, expansions, platforms and everything we know
The Witcher franchise is currently in a period of significant activity, with CD Projekt Red working on multiple projects including a remastered version of The Witcher 3, a new expansion, and a full sequel. The most immediate release is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered, a free upgrade for existing owners arriving in September 2026, while The Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release window. A new partnership with Blizzard Entertainment will also bring the remaster to Battle.net.
Release date
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered is scheduled for release on 29 September 2026. This was confirmed during Gamescom Opening Night Live in August 2026. The remaster will be a free upgrade for all existing owners of the game on PC and consoles.
For The Witcher 4, CD Projekt Red has not announced a specific release date. In a video statement ahead of Gamescom in August 2026, joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski said the studio is "targeting a 2028 release window." He acknowledged this is a long wait and that the date could slip, saying "let the team cook. It will be worth the wait."
A new expansion for The Witcher 3, titled Songs of the Past, has been announced but no release date has been confirmed. It is expected to launch sometime in 2027, according to information from the Blizzard partnership announcement.
Gameplay and features
The Witcher 3 Remastered includes a wide range of improvements beyond simple visual upgrades. CD Projekt Red has detailed "upgraded visuals, enhanced combat, improved traversal and movement, new Witcher sign effects, revamped mount handling, enhanced monster behaviors, a skill tree revamp, transmogrification, expanded photo mode, and new finishers." Additional features listed include reworked looting, refined animations, better quest tracking, foliage shading reworks, and improved menu navigation.
The remaster also includes all existing expansions for The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, which were made free for all players from 25 August 2026.
The Songs of the Past expansion will be set in a new continent and will feature a dark story. It will star Geralt, not Ciri, who is set to be the protagonist of The Witcher 4. It is unclear whether the expansion takes place before or after the events of The Witcher 3, or if it involves flashbacks.
For The Witcher 4, CD Projekt Red has described it as "a huge and immersive open world, intense and action-packed gameplay, and a deep impactful story." Nowakowski called it "our biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date." More than 500 developers are working on the project.
Platforms
The Witcher 3 Remastered will be available on PC and consoles as a free upgrade for existing owners. It has also been confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2. The game will additionally be distributed through Blizzard's Battle.net launcher when it launches on 29 September 2026.
The Songs of the Past expansion will also come to Battle.net when it releases.
No platforms have been confirmed for The Witcher 4.
Price and availability
The Witcher 3 Remastered is a free upgrade for anyone who already owns the base game. The existing expansions are included with the remaster and were also made free for all players from 25 August 2026.
The Songs of the Past expansion will be available for pre-order through Blizzard's store. Those who pre-order will receive a Geralt of Rivia-inspired cosmetic skin for Diablo IV.
Partnership with Blizzard
CD Projekt Red and Blizzard Entertainment have entered a business partnership. The first result is The Witcher 3 Remastered coming to Battle.net. The two companies said more details about the partnership will be shared at BlizzCon 2026, which takes place on 12-13 September 2026. CD Projekt Red stated that "bringing these games to Battle.net is just the beginning of our partnership with Blizzard." It has not been confirmed whether the partnership will extend to The Witcher 4 or the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel.
What is still unknown
Several key details remain unconfirmed. No release date has been given for the Songs of the Past expansion beyond a 2027 window. The Witcher 4's 2028 target is not a firm date and could change. No platforms have been announced for The Witcher 4. The full scope of the CD Projekt Red and Blizzard partnership beyond the initial announcements is unknown. It is also unclear whether the Songs of the Past expansion takes place before or after The Witcher 3's main story, or how it connects to the upcoming sequel.
