Cyberpunk 2077’s Immersive Third-Person mod lets you play the whole game in a new view

A new mod for Cyberpunk 2077 promises to let players experience the entire game from a third-person perspective, and early reactions suggest it is the most polished attempt yet at a viewpoint change that fans have requested for years.

The mod, called Immersive Third-Person and created by NexusMods user CybrDrake, has been released to the public and is already being praised as the best third-person option available for the role-playing game. While Cyberpunk 2077 has seen earlier third-person mods — the first appeared in 2021, followed by a more refined effort in 2024 — this new release is said to blow those previous attempts out of the water by offering a far more seamless experience.

What the mod changes

Immersive Third-Person introduces all-new animations for walking, sprinting and traversing over objects, and the mod’s creator has reworked most of the animations for the female character from scratch. The male character, by contrast, mainly receives animation fixes rather than a full overhaul, meaning players will get the best experience by playing as female V right now. The modder has said they plan to improve the male character’s animations in future versions of the mod.

One of the standout features is that first-person and third-person animations are completely isolated from each other. That means players can switch back to first-person at any time and get the full vanilla experience, while the third-person view uses its own custom animations. The mod also includes a smart automatic switching mechanic, which will return the camera to first-person during combat, driving, cutscenes, terminal use and other situations where the game requires it.

The mod is still a work-in-progress, however. Not every action can be performed in third-person — gunfighting, for instance, is not supported — and the animation work is uneven between the two playable characters. Despite those limitations, footage shared online by NieamArt has shown how dramatically the mod changes the feel of exploring Night City, with many describing it as playing like an entirely new game for the most part.

Why it matters now

The release of Immersive Third-Person comes at a time when Cyberpunk 2077 continues to receive attention both from its developers and from the wider community. The game has been supported extensively since its troubled launch in December 2020, and the animated spinoff Cyberpunk Edgerunners has brought new players into its dystopian world. The mod also arrives after the cancellation of a promising Cyberpunk VR mod, which had offered another perspective-changing way to experience the game but will never see release.

For players waiting on either a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 or the recently rumoured Cyberpunk Edgerunners spinoff game — which is said to be a 2.5D brawler rather than a first-person title — the third-person mod offers a fresh way to revisit Night City. The ability to switch between perspectives at will means players can enjoy the new custom animations without losing access to the original first-person experience when needed.

Other mods to consider

Immersive Third-Person is far from the only fan-made addition worth checking out for Cyberpunk 2077. The game has a thriving modding scene that includes an Enhanced Photo Mode Unlocker, a mod that lets cars fly, and others that open up new areas to explore. There is also a Grand Theft Auto-inspired Taxi Driver Mode, mods that let players take control of Ciri from The Witcher 3, an Urban Survival Immersion mod, a Story-Driven Rent System mod, a Fully Functional Fuel System mod, and an unofficial DLC mod that adds more than 50 new locations.

For players who want to improve the game’s graphics without paying for a visual upgrade, several free mods are available. The Ultra+ mod improves both the quality and performance of Path Tracing, with its creator claiming it can speed up performance by 30-40%. Other options include a mod that disables fake lights when using Path Tracing or Ray Tracing, and one that improves path-traced reflections. There are also free HD texture packs, including Cyberpunk 2077 HD Reworked, a pack that improves all trees, and another that enhances almost all buildings, terrain and environments. These texture packs do not work together, so players must choose only one. Additional mods add realistic ragdoll physics to finishing moves and overhaul law enforcement behaviour.
