Fate/Extra Record remake switches developer as Type Moon Studio BB director resigns
The long-troubled remake of the PSP dungeon crawler Fate/Extra Record has been handed to a new developer and publisher following the departure of its original studio director and a major restructuring of the parent company.
Aniplex will now publish the title, taking over from Bandai Namco Entertainment, which withdrew its support earlier this year. Development has also shifted from Type Moon Studio BB to Meteorise, the studio behind the 2025 anime fighting game Bleach: Rebirth of Souls. The news was confirmed by Type Moon and Type Moon Studio BB, with Famitsu reporting the change of hands.
The remake was first announced in 2020 and was originally expected to ship in 2024. However, the project has been plagued by extensive delays. Earlier this year, Bandai Namco pulled out as publisher, forcing the cancellation of all Japanese pre-orders for the cult-favourite RPG. The game’s development has been notoriously difficult, and the departure of both the original publisher and the original developer marks a significant shift in the project’s trajectory.
The change in developer coincides with the resignation of Kazuya Nino as director of Type Moon Studio BB. Nino, a former Square Enix and Atlus director known for his work on titles such as Trauma Center and Dragon Quest Builders, had been leading the studio since its founding in 2019. In a statement on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Nino confirmed he had left the studio, citing personal reasons. He added that he had also stepped down from his role as director on Fate/Extra Record with immediate effect, and requested that his name be removed from the game’s credits. He apologised to fans for being unable to complete his duties as director, and expressed respect for the remaining development team. While he will not comment publicly on the game moving forward, he assured fans that the remaining development team, following the restructuring and planned changes, will meet audience expectations.
The original Fate/Extra was a 2010 PSP dungeon crawler that earned positive reviews upon its release. It is one of many spin-offs from the dark fantasy visual novel Fate/Stay Night, which has spawned numerous adaptations in the form of anime, video games, and manga. The success of the franchise transformed its hobbyist development team at Type Moon into a media conglomerate. Type Moon established Type Moon Studio BB as a dedicated game development subsidiary in 2019, with the Fate/Extra Record remake as its first project.
The news of the new publisher and developer for the game comes alongside a major restructuring of Type Moon Studio BB, aimed at mitigating the issues the studio has faced. The nature of the restructuring has not been detailed, but it is intended to address the difficulties that have plagued the project.
Aniplex, the new publisher, is a well-known Japanese entertainment company that has been involved in the Fate franchise previously. Meteorise, the new developer, is the team behind the 2025 anime fighting game Bleach: Rebirth of Souls. No new release date for Fate/Extra Record has been announced, and it remains unclear when the game will be ready for launch. The project has been in development for over six years, and the recent changes suggest that the remake may finally be back on track under new leadership.
