Resident Evil 4 remake mod restores cut Ashley Graham prologue chapter 0

A new mod for the Resident Evil 4 remake has restored a playable prologue featuring Ashley Graham, a sequence that was cut during the game’s development. The Chapter 0 Restoration mod, available on NexusMods, reconstructs the missing mission using assets and data left in the game’s files, allowing players to experience Ashley’s story before Leon Kennedy arrives in the village.

The mod was created by a modder known as Keff0, who describes it as a restoration of a chapter that existed at some point during development but was removed before the remake’s release. According to the mod’s description, the prologue was designed to be a short, playable segment set at night, ending with Ashley’s capture. The scene takes place on a path that is not present in the final game, and the modder reports that most of its details and collision data had been stripped from the files. Despite this, enough remnants remained to piece together a functional version.

In the restored chapter, players control Ashley as she navigates the village at night, using her phone as a flashlight. She stumbles upon cultists murdering an outsider, and also witnesses Luis being taken captive. The sequence leads into the official game’s opening, with Ashley turning and running before the playable section begins, culminating in her capture. The modder notes that the animations, camera angles, and unique features such as the phone flashlight were extracted from the game’s files, while the rest of the content was recreated using existing in-game assets. The mod is designed to integrate seamlessly into the New Game flow, running as a proper chapter before Chapter 1.

The original Resident Evil 4 remake, released in 2023, reworked several aspects of the classic survival horror game. It toned down the escort mission frustrations that had made Ashley a controversial figure in the original, and gave her more substantial and compelling playable sequences, including a notable encounter with armoured monsters in a crypt. The remake also added a parry mechanic and improved the writing, with a performance from voice actor Genevieve Buechner helping to endear the character to players. Despite these changes, the prologue chapter was left on the cutting room floor.

Why the prologue was cut

The reasons for Capcom’s decision to cut the prologue remain speculative. Some observers have suggested that the sequence may have been removed because it over-explained story elements that are already implied or alluded to in the final game. Players already know that both Ashley and Luis end up captured, and the prologue arguably diminishes the slow, ominous build-up of the opening minutes, where Leon encounters the Ganados for the first time. Even if the cut makes sense from a narrative standpoint, the mod offers a rare glimpse into a deleted scene, something that is uncommon in the video game industry due to its secrecy and the fundamental differences between how games and movies are developed.

The mod has been welcomed by fans who feel that Ashley Graham has been unfairly treated by the Resident Evil community. The original game’s escort missions, with their clumsily tuned AI, made her a target of frustration, but the remake’s improvements and the new prologue have led some to call for more content featuring the character. While a full Ashley Graham spin-off or DLC seems unlikely, the restoration mod provides a satisfying taste of what could have been.
